“My name is Hersi Dorne, I am a junior student at Wentworth Institute of Technology, and I am studying Civil engineering. For the past 15 weeks, it was a pleasure for me to work at Nauset Construction at their project located at 205 Maverick in East Boston. I also had the chance to work under Nauset’s finest Michael Burke, whom I learned a lot from, whether it is the construction side of civil engineering or how to be a professional engineer and what it takes to be successful in this business. Working in the construction field gave me a different perspective on how construction works and how everyone had to collaborate starting from the owner to the subcontractors to complete the project.
Some of the responsibilities I had during this co-op experience which varied included delivering materials to other job sites, completing a daily report which included daily tasks completed by subcontractors and progress pictures of the job site. I did lots of hands on, including installing window screens, taking measurements of equipment, monitoring deliveries in the job site, and helping to regulate traffic during deliveries.
What I enjoyed the most about working with Nauset was the freedom to learn, at times it didn’t feel like I was in an internship but a full-time employee. I was exposed to variety of leadership positions which included helping to close up the job site and overseeing other key tasks. It was always a comfortable/learning environment whether I was around the supers or project managers, and they were always there to assist and help with difficulties that I faced. Overall I would say it was a great experience which made me change what I want to do in the future. Before this co-op I wanted to be a structural design engineering, but after this experience I fancy the construction field and that was mainly to what I was exposed to and the people around me. I am very thankful for the opportunity and I would definitely recommend Nauset Construction whether it’s for future internships or a full time job.” (Hersi Dorne)
We wanted to thank Hersi Dorne for being a great co-op this season and we’re very pleased to know he has enjoyed his time working with us!
Our long-standing co-op program is something that Nauset is very proud of and planns on continuing and growing throughout the years to come!
